SBCERA Reports Preliminary Net Investment Return for the 2022-23 Fiscal Year

The San Bernardino County Employees’ Retirement Association (SBCERA) announces a preliminary 5.0% net return on investments for the 12-month period that ended June 30, 2023. Assets stood at $14 billion at the end of the fiscal year.

Eric ran for SBCERA’s vacant General Member Trustee seat uncontested and will serve a term of office from July 11, 2023, to December 31, 2024.
He will be officially sworn into office as a SBCERA Board of Retirement Trustee at our Board Meeting on Thursday, August 3, 2023.
SBCERA Not Impacted by CalPERS Third-Party Breach – Your Information is Safe
This week, CalPERS announced that its retired members were involved in a worldwide data security breach, impacting PBI Research Services/Berwyn Group involving the MOVEit Transfer Application.
We want to assure you that SBCERA was not in any way impacted and your information is safe. Additionally, SBCERA is not subject to the same file transfer risk because of the current safeguards we have in place.

One seat on the SBCERA Board of Retirement will be open for election later this year. Candidacy information will be available May 30, 2023, and the candidate filing period ends on June 23, 2023.

New Self-Service Options in mySBCERA
Retirees and beneficiaries now have the option to update tax withholding elections and direct deposit information in their online account. This new functionality is only available to members who are already receiving monthly benefits.

Investment Update

In recent months, during a time of global economic stress, our long-term strategy has shown resilience.
SBCERA earned a 2.7% return on investments for the 12-month period that ended January 2023. (The 2.7% is “net of fees,” which means that we’ve already subtracted all costs associated with the investment—like management or transaction expenses.)
SBCERA Welcomes Newest Trustee, Supervisor Dawn Rowe
We are pleased to share that Supervisor Dawn Rowe has been appointed by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to serve as Trustee on the SBCERA Board of Retirement. Dawn will serve a term of office from January 24, 2023 to December 31, 2025.
Dawn was officially sworn into office as a SBCERA Board of Retirement Trustee at our Board Meeting on Thursday, February 1, 2023.
2023 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA)
This year’s 2.0% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) will be effective April 1, 2023. The SBCERA Board of Retirement approved the COLA for Retirees and Beneficiaries at its Board meeting on February 2, 2023.

2022 1099-R Tax Forms Available in mySBCERA

The Board of Trustees Elect New Chair and Vice Chair
We are pleased to announce the SBCERA Board of Retirement trustees have elected Marc Bracco as the new Chair, and Jean-Rene Basle as the Vice Chair.
Marc has been an Elected Safety Member of the SBCERA Board of Retirement since January 1, 2019. He serves as a Lieutenant assigned to the Special Operations Bureau of the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner’s Department, and has been in law enforcement for over 18 years. He is currently the Region 5 Vice Chairman for the California Narcotic Officers’ Association. Before being elected as the Safety Member Trustee, he spent the last eight years involved with the Sheriff’s Employees’ Benefit Association (SEBA).
