SBCERA Members* do not participate in Social Security. In other
words, your earnings from your SBCERA-covered employment are not
covered under Social Security.
However, most SBCERA Members do participate in Medicare. Medicare is our
country’s health insurance program for people age 65 or
older. You should apply even if you do not intend to retire
yet.
For coverage information about Social Security Retirement
Benefits or Medicare, SBCERA recommends you contact your
employer’s Human Resources/Benefits Department or
visit www.SSA.gov. You can
apply for Social Security and Medicare benefits on the Social
Security website.
