Looking Ahead to 2024: A Message from SBCERA’s CEO

As we reflect on this last year, I’m proud of the significant milestones we reached at SBCERA that are centered around elevating member experience. We understand the responsibility we have to you, and we don’t take that lightly.
Our team remains focused on our service to you, while continuing to plan for the future.
Invested in Your Future
Providing you with retirement security is central to our mission at SBCERA. Through strategic and opportunistic investing, we closed our fiscal year, which runs from July 1 through June 30, with a 5% return on investments, reaching $14.1 billion in assets.
Despite economic challenges, our long-term strategy has shown resilience.
I’m proud of our Investment Team for their diligence and proactive posture, supported by a collaborative and empowering Board who allows us to be nimble enough to make quick decisions and take advantage of market opportunities.
No matter what the economic climate brings, your pension has mechanisms and strategies in place to protect your income, now and in the future.
Reflecting on 2023
We have a smart and capable team at SBCERA who’ve remained committed to providing the service you rely on, while tackling many important initiatives as part of our Triennial Strategic Plan.
New Online Options
This year, we completed a multi-year effort to modernize our pension management software, introducing new self-service options available in mySBCERA, your online member portal.
You can now apply for retirement from the comfort of your own home, make a purchase request, execute a service purchase contract, request a refund, and more—all while tracking the progress of your request. Retirees and beneficiaries can make tax withholding election changes and update their direct deposit information online.
These enhancements are big milestones for SBCERA and support our commitment to enhancing your experience as a member.

We launched a Quick Tip video series designed to provide you with the information you need to feel confident in your retirement decisions. Driven by frequently asked questions and direct feedback from our members, the topics shared in this series are among the most popular.
